The Leeds Police Department said a man suspected of trying to escape police by jumping on a car and entering another vehicle had a criminal history and was wanted at the time of the crime.
Kardareous Monteniz Gillis, 31 of Irondale, is charged with first-degree kidnapping, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle by force, unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, second-degree retail theft, tampering with physical evidence, attempting to elude, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
Police said the incident occurred after a reported theft at Bass Pro Shops on November 29.
Officers were informed that the suspect was in the Chevron parking lot at 6995 Parkway Drive. When officers arrived, they reported that the suspect jumped onto the back of a vehicle waiting at the nearby intersection. The driver of the vehicle accelerated into the parking lot of Buc-ee’s, where the suspect jumped off and ran towards another vehicle.
“A juvenile, who was standing outside of the vehicle, saw the male running towards his/her direction and attempted to close the back seat door; however, the male opened the door and entered the back seat,” police stated. “The male then exited the back seat and used force to enter the driver’s seat of the vehicle.”
The vehicle owner grabbed the man and removed him from the vehicle. The suspect then fled towards the rear of the store and hid under a large trash compactor. Officers followed him and placed him under arrest.
Officers found fentanyl on the suspect and learned he was wanted on multiple felony warrants. According to court documents, Gillis was wanted on failure to appear. His previous charges, spanning a decade, include theft of property, burglary, strangulation, escape, attempting to elude, possession of a controlled substance, fraudulent use of a credit card, possession of a pistol by a person forbidden, promoting prison contraband, and organized retail theft.
Gillis is now in the Jefferson County Jail with no bond.
