Pickens County Sheriff’s Office said an investigation into a burglary led them to a home where a couple was found slain.

Justin and Lena Elrod were found deceased in a home on Langdon Woods Road early Sunday.

Just after midnight, deputies were called to a burglary in progress in the 1800 block of County Road 49. They arrived to find the suspect, whom they immediately took into custody on a burglary charge. Upon investigation, deputies learned the suspect could be connected to a double homicide. That’s when detectives headed to the home where they found the Elrods.

The suspect, George Birmingham, was charged with capital murder, two counts of murder, second-degree burglary, possession of a controlled substance, first-degree possession of marijuana and resisting arrest. He is being held in the Pickens County Jail with no bond.

Authorities said more charges may be forthcoming.

Birmingham is considered innocent until proven guilty.

Officers from the Reform Police Department, the Gordo Police Department and the Carrollton Police Department, and investigators with the 24th Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office responded.

“We ask everyone to continue keeping the victims’ families, those affected by this tragedy, and the responding first responders in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” the sheriff’s office stated.
