A man is facing a murder charge after police said he punched another man, causing his death.
Brandon Phillip Lloyd Davis, of Florence, is charged with murder and second-degree assault.
The Florence Police Department said Davis and Jeremy Benson got into a verbal altercation on March 16. According to court documents, the incident happened at On the Rocks pub in downtown Florence.
The two continued arguing, leading to Davis punching Benson, causing him to fall and hit his head on the concrete. Benson was taken to Huntsville Hospital but died several days later from head trauma and brain bleed.
Court documents state Davis was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident.
Lauderdale County District Court Judge Will Motlow has been assigned the case. Motlow, the former probate judge, was appointed to the judge seat by Gov. Kay Ivey last month.
Motlow will oversee an Aniah’s Law hearing in the Davis case.
In the meantime, Davis is being held in jail without bond. He is considered innocent until proven guilty.
