A Courtland man with a lengthy felony record is facing life in prison after being convicted by a Morgan County jury of trafficking more than 500 grams of methamphetamines.

According to law enforcement, Jyasiel Devante Hampton, 33, was arrested in March 2022 after attempting to sell 1.5 pounds of methamphetamine to a potential buyer for $5,000. The buyers in this case turned out to be agents with the North Alabama Drug Task Force. Testimony at the trial indicated that the drugs were transported into Decatur from Colbert County.

"Investigators made contact with Hampton and were given consent to search his vehicle," the affidavit in the case said. "Nothing was located in his vehicle. Investigators searched the immediate area from where Hampton came from and located an XXL jacket with 1.5 pounds of methamphetamine wrapped inside it."

Hampton's sentencing is scheduled for November 6. Because of his prior felony convictions, a life sentence is mandatory with or without parole. Hampton will also be responsible for a $100,000 fine.
