The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating a New Year's shooting involving a victim who was likely an unintended target.

A 39-year-old man was wounded by gunfire while asleep in his bed at 4340 Pinson Valley Parkway.

Deputies responded to the scene at 5:54 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Center Point Fire and Rescue responded and transported the man to UAB Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was asleep in his bed when he was struck by a bullet and that the shooting may have occurred as a result of celebratory gunfire," the sheriff's office said in a statement.
