A search is underway for the man who escaped from the Elba Community Work Center on Thursday.
According to authorities, Emmett Sigers escaped on Thursday around 1 a.m. He was discovered missing around 6:30 a.m. during an institutional count.
Sigers, 21, was serving a 10-year sentence for a class B felony.
According to the Covington County District Attorney's Office, Sigers "currently has a case pending in Covington County, where he is charged with Murder and Attempted Murder."
"After serving prison time for a Covington County conviction for Domestic Violence by Strangulation, Sigers shot and killed Cammeon Franklin and shot and injured another person in the vehicle, on December 9, 2023," the DA's office wrote. "During a court hearing to decide whether or not Sigers’ release from prison should be revoked, testimony revealed that witnesses saw Sigers shoot 16 times at the victims, and the victims’ vehicle had at least 13 bullet holes from the attack."
District Attorney Walt Merrell stated, "Sigers is dangerous. He has no care or consideration for human life, and he has illustrated this many times over already in his young life. Be aware of who he is, and call law enforcement if you see him.”
The escapee was last seen wearing state-issued khaki brown clothing. He is listed as a black male, approximately 5'11", 155 lbs. Sigers has a tattoo over his left eyebrow that reads "Loyalty."
Authorities urge anyone with information about Sigers to contact the police or CrimeStoppers immediately. Tips can be submitted through the 24-hour tip line at 334-215-STOP (7867) or 1-833-AL1-STOP (833-251-7867).
UPDATE 4:55 p.m.:
According to the Covington County District Attorney's Office, Sigers has been captured.
"I am thankful for the immediate response by the State Bureau of Investigation, local law enforcement, and ADOC to find this dangerous man before he hurt anyone else," Merrell wrote on Facebook. "Like all of you, I am equally frustrated and concerned that ADOC would place someone charged with murder at a work release camp, and so I will be writing ADOC immediately to express that concern. Sigers will go back into ADOC custody, but once returned to Covington County, he has no bond on the murder charge."
