The conviction of a Birmingham man was affirmed by the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals, Attorney General Steve Marshall announced.

Clinton Tyrone Ruffin, 41, was convicted of manslaughter in Jefferson County after prosecutors showed he shot an intoxicated family member numerous times after the family member struck Ruffin’s car with his fist.

The jury acquitted Ruffin of murder but found him guilty of provocation manslaughter. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Ruffin asked an appeals court to reverse the conviction, claiming he was acting in self-defense. However, the appeals court upheld the conviction.

Marshall commended Assistant Attorney General Marc Starrett for his work on the case.
