The criminal court docket may be delayed for months in Walker County after a fire destroyed the office of the public defender and all its records.

A massive fire at the office in downtown Jasper was called in around 4 a.m. on Saturday, July 5, 2025. It was in the 300 block of 19th Street West, in the county seat of Jasper.

The building housing the office was destroyed, with only a couple of walls remaining standing. Other nearby businesses were also damaged. Roads in the surrounding area were closed.

It appears that all of the legal records in the office were destroyed.

Since the fire occurred on a Saturday and early in the morning, there was no one present in the building, and consequently, there were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The public defender is tasked with providing legal counsel in criminal court to accused defendants who are determined to be indigent and unable to afford a private defense attorney. They must request an appointed lawyer.

State Rep. Tim Wadsworth, who represents parts of Walker County and parts of Winston and Cullman counties, made this comment:

Prayers for the Walker County community related to the fire that occurred at the Walker County Public Defenders Office in downtown Jasper. Fires don’t just destroy buildings. This type of fire has an impact on all Walker Countians. The public defender office represents defendants. However, the fire’s impact will result in increased work on the District Attorney’s Office, Circuit Clerk’s Office, Judges and law enforcement. Many court cases will probably be delayed. Justice will probably be delayed for victims, etc. Fires are tragic events that hurt your community. Without fire departments, the fire could have spread. Please support all court officials during this difficult time. Hopefully the cause will be determined. Please say a prayer for all the affected. __Rep Tim Wadsworth House District 14.

There is no word yet on whether the records were backed up on off-site computer storage or in the cloud.

The accused defendants have a constitutional right to a speedy trial. If there are delays in the trials, some defendants may attempt to win dismissal of their cases. Also, for victims of crimes and witnesses, a speedy trial is needed.

“Justice delayed is justice denied.”
