State Rep. Phillip Pettus (R-Killen) lost his reelection bid during Tuesday's Republican primary to challenger Maurice McCaney.
McCaney received nearly 60% of the vote with 2,907 ballots cast, compared to Pettus' 2,000, according to unofficial results on the Alabama Secretary of State's website.
Pettus was first elected in 2014.
McCaney announced his big win to a room full of supporters Tuesday night.
