The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office arrested a McAdory High School student after school resource officers discovered a gun.
The firearm was found on Monday. Detectives were called to the scene after the SRO secured the weapon.
The sheriff's office said the student never threatened anyone or displayed the weapon. The teen boy was taken into custody.
"I am thankful for the due diligence of our SROs," stated Sheriff Mark Pettway. "Their quick response possibly helped prevent a serious incident from occurring."
The 17-year-old suspect was charged with certain persons (Minor) forbidden to possess a pistol. Because he is a juvenile, his identity will not be released.
Pettway said the student is in custody at the Jefferson County Youth Detention Center.
