Shortly after graduating from Miles College, Hannah Smith went on a cruise to the Bahamas on May 11, 2025. She went to celebrate her graduation but returned home as a double amputee.
Hannah Smith is now suing Carnival Cruise Line, Sun Cay and Pearl Investment Management Group.
Smith, now a double amputee, says she lost both of her legs after an incident on a tour boat. Daily Mail reported that Smith was highly intoxicated when she boarded the boat. A federal complaint outlines a day of drinking during the Pearl Island Beach Escape, which Smith booked through Carnival.
Upon arrival on the island, Smith's complaint states that staff began grooming the group and serving complimentary cups of rum punch. The suit also claims that another drink was spiked with a sedative and that a supervisor of the bar gave the group a marijuana joint. While on the island, Smith claims she was told "the ocean is your toilet" when she had to relieve herself.
Later, the group participated in a tour boat excursion and while disembarking, Smith said she had to go to the bathroom again. She entered the water, and that's when her life changed forever. The captain of the vessel started the engine, sucking Smith underwater. Smith's friends pulled her to safety, but the damage was done. Her legs were slashed, causing her to lose 60% of her blood.
She was flown to Miami, where she was hospitalized and underwent multiple surgeries over the course of two months.
Smith claims she was grossly impaired by drugs and alcohol when she made the decision to lower herself into the water to relieve herself. She is seeking an undisclosed amount in damages for negligence. The complaint was filed in Miami U.S. District Court.
Smith updates followers on Instagram, thanking supporters who have donated over $75,000 to support her recovery. Her story has gained nationwide attention.
Carnival's attorneys claim the excursion is operated by an independent entity, not Carnival.
A spokesperson for Carnival told Daily Mail, "Our thoughts are with Ms. Smith, and we wish her strength and healing. At Carnival Cruise Line, we continuously strive to keep our guest and crew safe as a priority. Out of respect for ongoing legal proceedings, we are unable to comment further. We remain committed to supporting safety and wellbeing in all we do."
Sun Cay and Pearl Investment Management Group argue that the Florida courts lack jurisdiction over the Bahamas.
