Millbrook recently extended an ordinance banning new construction and business licenses for gas stations, convenience stores, vape shops and package stores.
The Millbrook City Council initially approved a pause on issuing new construction and business licenses for those types of businesses in May 2025.
Millbrook Mayor Al Kelley told 1819 News on Wednesday the council extended the ban for another year.
“We extended it about a month or two months ago. We extended it for another year,” Kelley said. “We did have three plans that were in our office prior to our first ban on it for major gas stations, so we’ve still got two of those three that probably aren’t going to do anything. One of them probably is, and we’ll allow that because they were already in our office prior to the ban.”
He continued, “I think they’re overbuilt. I’m more concerned on the vape shops and things of that nature that affect kids.”
“Our school kids are getting into that stuff, and some of those shops are selling stuff they shouldn’t be selling,” Kelley said. “We’ve caught a few of them, and ABC Board and some others have come in there and busted a few of them. It’s in there, and so the only way to do it is try to limit what comes in, try to keep the bad stuff out.”
