MOBILE – The St. Louis Street project, which has been eight years in the making, was approved Tuesday by the Mobile City Council.
Mayor Sandy Stimpson said the project to rebuild 17 city blocks will cost nearly $17 million.
"That's a million dollars a block," Stimpson said. "I can remember as a child – and I'm going to guess that I was probably 10 or 12 years old – they were building an interstate for a million dollars a mile, so things have changed somewhat."
Stimpson said utilities will have to be removed and replaced, but the plan is to avoid disruptions in services as much as possible. He said the City has met with every property owner on St. Louis Street and the surrounding areas.
"It'll be a great project once it's complete and we have several partners that have obviously helped us in the funding," Stimpson explained.
Among funding sources are RESTORE Act funds from the BP oil spill, funds from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Mobile City Council, and others.
The council approved a contract for $16,797,719 with Mobile-based McElhenney Construction Company LLC.
