MOBILE – Mobile City Councilman William Carroll recently paid his respects to a local high school student who drowned over the weekend at Smith Lake.

Will Glass, 17, was a student at McGill-Toolen Catholic School. Carroll said Glass was his daughter’s classmate, so the shocking death hit home.

“You watch these kids grow up from kindergarten and first grade all the way through the 12th grade, and kids like this become family because they deal with each other every day,” Carroll said. “And when you're in a parochial school system like they were and you see each other every day, it becomes part of your own family. So, our condolences to the Glass family – may you find peace and resolve during this time.”

Witnesses said Glass was among a group of teenagers jumping off a dock Sunday night. Glass jumped in and never resurfaced.

McGill-Toolen released a statement announcing the death and remembering Glass as a “bright, kind-hearted young man who brought joy, laughter, and a deep sense of friendship to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”

Grief counselors and campus ministers have been made available to students and staff.

The school will host a rosary prayer service at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Wednesday, beginning at 6 p.m.
