MOBILE – The Mobile County Republican Party hosted a candidate fair on Monday with candidates and representatives from dozens of campaigns.

More than 35 campaigns were represented at The Grand Hall, and sample ballots were passed around. Organizers said the event broke the record for the most candidates attending an executive committee meeting.

"This gives the voters an opportunity to come and meet these candidates that they're reading about in the news or seeing on TV," said Mobile County GOP chairman Ken Kvalheim. "You know, as the candidates travel around the state, there's not many opportunities that the voters get a chance to just say hello and get to know them and actually talk to them in person."

Candidates for U.S. Senate, Congressional Districts 1 and 2, Lieutenant Governor, Public Service Commissioner, State Senate, State Representative, State Treasurer, State Auditor and Mobile County Sheriff were among those in attendance.

Kvalheim said it is important to allow voters to meet candidates in person in the lead-up to the May 19 primary election.

"Every race is important, and we have a lot of local races that are very, very important and in the state race, so I think they all affect the quality of life in families in Alabama," he added.

The Mobile County GOP is working on voter education and aiming to increase voter turnout for the primary.

Sample ballots for the primary are available on the Secretary of State's website.
