The Mobile County Sheriff's Office has taken custody of 148 sexual assault kits that were previously unprocessed by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences during its evidence inventory of the Prichard Police Department.

Of 247 sexual assault kits, only 99 had been processed.

"This is about accountability and ensuring every victim's case receives the attention it deserves," said Sheriff Paul Burch. "By identifying every kit, securing the evidence, and partnering with the FBI to complete the testing, we are taking an important step toward seeking justice for victims and strengthening the integrity of these investigations."

The sheriff's office took over the Prichard Police Department's investigations in June.

Burch said taking custody of the unprocessed kits will ensure evidence is logged, inventoried and properly packaged for secure storage.

"The Mobile County Sheriff's Office remains committed to working alongside its federal, state and local law enforcement partners to ensure every available investigative resource is utilized," Burch added. "As forensic testing is completed and results are returned, investigators will evaluate each case and determine the appropriate investigative and prosecutorial steps based on the evidence and applicable law. The Sheriff's Office is committed to ensuring these cases receive the thorough attention they deserve and that every effort is made to pursue justice for victims."
