Multiple major projects in Mobile are expected to be completed in 2026.
Among those are the Mobile International Airport at the Brookley Aeroplex, the Africatown Welcome Center and renovations at Cooper Riverside Park, Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis said.
"This is in addition to the steady progress we'll be making on Mobile Arena and other city facilities, including new community centers at Taylor Park and on Dauphin Island Parkway, and a much-needed new home for our Animal Services Department," Cheriogotis stated.
Mobile International Airport
The Mobile Airport Authority (MAA) announced that construction of the new terminal at Mobile International Airport (BFM) is currently under budget.
The $362 million project is expected to be completed by August 2026, with commercial flights scheduled for November.
The project was originally expected to cost approximately $381 million, but after a cost review, the Airport Authority identified cost-saving opportunities. They rebid the interior build-out project, and lower prices were submitted.
Africatown Welcome Center
The $5.1 million Africatown Welcome Center is expected to be completed in 2026.
The center is expected to allow visitors to learn about and honor the legacy of Africatown and to learn the story of the Clotilda. The center is part of the City's effort to preserve Africatown's past and develop its future.
Cooper Riverside Park
Renovations at Cooper Riverside Park are underway to expand access to the City's waterfront.
Mobile is improving the bulkhead, correcting erosion issues and adding 60 feet along the water's edge.
The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2026.
"These are the kinds of major projects we want to see in the City of Mobile, but to do these kinds of big things, we've also got to get the basics right," Cheriogotis added. "That's why you'll also see the city continuing to make new investments into public safety to put more first responders on the street, improve crime prevention strategies and make sure that Mobilians feel safe in our downtown, our parks, and in their neighborhoods."
