MOBILE — Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson honored a three-time Olympic medal winner from Mobile on Tuesday.

Paige Madden won three medals swimming for Team USA in Paris: two silver medals swimming in 4x200-meter freestyle relay and a bronze medal in 800-meter freestyle.

“She actually swam in the 800-meter freestyle, swam five seconds faster than she's ever swam before,” Stimpson said during Tuesday's Mobile Council meeting. “And any athlete that can beat their record about five seconds, even in that distance, for us is amazing. She's an amazing young lady.”

While at UMS-Wright Preparatory School in Mobile, Madden was a member of the Mobile Swim Association. She set seven state records and won 11 state championships.

Madden is a four-time NCAA champion and a two-time ACC Scholar-Athlete. It’s not all sports for Madden, either. She was a member of the Cum Laude Society and an AP Scholar with Distinction Award honoree. She also runs a club for hospice patients and volunteers at a senior living facility.

“She is probably Mobile's most decorated athlete all this number of years that she's been doing this,” Stimpson added.

Stimpson asked for a round of applause for Madden and said the City is planning something special for her when she returns.
