Outgoing Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson backed former District Judge Sprio Cheriogotis on Wednesday in his mayoral bid.

Stimpson joined Cheriogotis in a ceremony at Greer’s St. Louis Market to announce his endorsement of the former judge, who Stimpson said would "see God's will done for the city."

According to Stimpson, Cheriogotis represents a “generational change.” He said the judge would understood how to deal with crime and fight for small businesses.

“The person who will, or is most likely to embrace these concepts and build upon the momentum that exists today is Spiro Cheriogotis,” he added.

He added that he made his decision after hearing the seven candidates participate in a forum the night before.

"After listening, I thought that I had made the right decision, and there was more validation there,” Stimpson said, according to Lagniappe. “I also wanted to give it more time … Everybody can articulate that we need to do more on crime. But who is going to really understand that there are multiple components? And I think Spiro is that guy.”

Cheriogotis said he was "honored and humbled" to receive Stimpson's support.
