President-elect Donald Trump announced Thursday that Wells Griffith, a Mobile native and longtime GOP operative, would rejoin the upcoming administration as the Under Secretary of Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy.

Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social page, praising Griffith's work during his first presidency.

"During my First Term, Wells served as the Senior Advisor to the CEO of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, Senior Director for Energy and Environment on the National Security Council, as well as Acting Assistant Secretary for International Affairs at the Department of Energy," Trump wrote. "Wells will now work with our highly respected Secretary of Energy Nominee, Chris Wright, to DRILL, BABY, DRILL, and unleash American Energy Dominance."

Griffith has been active in GOP politics for decades. After graduating from law school, he worked on several Republican campaigns in Mississippi, later becoming executive director of the Mississippi Republican Party in 2009

Griffith also ran for Alabama's first congressional district seat in 2013 but was defeated in the Republican primary.

He joined the Trump administration in 2017 as a senior White House adviser for the Department of Energy and then became principal deputy assistant secretary in the department's Office of International Affairs. During Trump's impeachment hearings in 2019, Griffith was one of the witnesses called who declined to show up for deposition.

Griffith thanked Trump for his appointment, vowing to "unleash American Energy Dominance."
