The Mobile Police Department placed an officer on leave after he was arrested for child sex abuse in Baldwin County.
Jacob Marcus Clifford, 30, of Daphne, was charged with seven felonies, including four charges of sex abuse of a child under 12 and three counts of first-degree sodomy.
According to a complaint, the victim, a 9-year-old girl, was subjected to sexual contact and “deviate sexual intercourse.”
Mobile Police chief William Jackson said his office was notified of a criminal investigation involving Clifford last Friday.
“The moment I was notified of the investigation, Ofc. Clifford was placed on paid administrative leave, and he remains on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation,” Jackson said. “My officers are not above the law. All of my officers are held to the highest standards of conduct, regardless of if they’re on duty or off.”
The Daphne Police Department is investigating.
Clifford is considered innocent until proven guilty.
