The Mobile Police Department is investigating after an officer was shot on Sunday, leading to a two-hour-long standoff and a subsequent police patrol car crash.
The incident began just before 10 a.m., when officers responded to shots fired in the 100 block of Tuscaloosa Street. As officers approached the home, a man started shooting at them, striking one officer.
A standoff continued until noon, when a man and woman exited the home.
Justin Senia, 40, was taken into custody.
The officer shot was taken to the hospital, where he underwent surgery. Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis said the officer was in critical but stable condition.
“This was an extremely dangerous situation that could have ended much worse,” said Cheriogotis. “I want to commend everyone at MPD for responding with professionalism, discipline, and restraint.”
Police said that while en route to the standoff, an MPD patrol vehicle carrying two officers was involved in a crash. The officers were transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The police department and Cheriogotis asked for prayers.
“District Attorney Keith Blackwood, who personally responded to the scene this morning, spoke with me earlier, and his office is committed to bringing swift and serious charges against the suspect,” Cheriogotis added. “While certainly alarming, today’s events showed the skill, preparation, and dedication of the men and women who serve our community every day.
“There is no such thing as a ‘routine call’ for our law enforcement officers, and Mobilians should be grateful for their service — especially on a day like this.”
