Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson is looking to improve public safety and address a stray animal problem with his new budget proposal.

The mayor’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2026 was presented to the council this week.

It includes $1.6 million for new police equipment and $200,000 to expand the City’s spay and neuter program.

The capital budget includes $80 million in spending, based on projected revenues and expenditures. Each city council district would get $4 million for its own capital improvements.

The proposed budget includes increased allocations for public safety, stormwater management, local infrastructure and more.

“This budget allows us to continue making big investments in Mobile’s future, and that wouldn’t be possible without the commitment to fiscal stewardship we’ve prioritized with the City Council and our department leaders over the last 12 years,” said Stimpson. “Together, we’ve placed the next mayor and City Council in a strong position to continue building on our city’s momentum.”

Other allocations are nearly $1 million for a new ankle monitoring program, $2.6 million for new police and fire positions, $300,000 for the Gulf Coast Technology Center, $1.7 million for pothole and street surface repairs and $1.5 million for future economic development.

City employees would get a 2.5% merit raise.

Revenues are expected to remain level in FY 2026. The budget allows for the increased allocations without pulling from reserves or cutting services.

This story has been corrected to reflect the budget includes $1.6 million for new police equipment, not a new police department as originally reported.
