Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson says a project years in the making will soon be underway.
The transformation of 17 blocks of St. Louis Street, in downtown Mobile, will make the roadways safer and more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers, Stimpson said.
“This exciting effort builds on the momentum created by the ongoing private investment along St. Louis Street, which now features grocery stores, breweries, offices, restaurants, residential housing and more,” Stimpson said. “This is the city’s investment in a growing piece of downtown that will support economic development and improve quality of life for the many Mobilians who live, work and play in this area every day.”
The City held a community meeting to update the public on Thursday night. Stimpson showed plans that include all new underground utilities and drainage features, new curbs and gutters, sidewalks, pedestrian lighting and landscaping. There will be on-street parking added.

According to Stimpson, the design will help slow down cars in the area.
Stimpson thanked business owners and stakeholders in the area, and thanked funding partners, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Alabama Department of Transportation, the Mobile Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Mobile City Council.
