"I couldn't have done it without a single one of them," he said. "This team tonight, y'all, this team tonight made this happen. I couldn't have done it without a single one of them."
The crowd chanted, "Spiro! Spiro! Spiro!" before Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson took to the stage and handed Cheriogotis a baton.
"You pulled this city back from the brink, and I intend to keep it as far away from it as I can," Cheriogotis told Stimpson.
The projected mayor-elect promised to work for all of the people of Mobile.
"In this city of Mobile, from this point forward, we're not looking back," he added. "We are looking forward to what's next for our great city and what's next for this city is a city that works for everyone. A city where our neighborhoods are safe, where opportunity is real and where fun can be had."
With 97% of precincts reporting, Cheriogotis had 51.39% of the votes. Cheriogotis received 24,949 votes, and his opponent, State Rep. Barbara Drummond, had 23,596.
