A majority of the Montgomery City Council voted on Tuesday to continue requiring council approval of all mayoral contracts above $50,000.

The resolution had been brought up multiple times at past meetings, but was approved on Tuesday.

Montgomery City Councilman Andrew Szymanski said at the Tuesday meeting that requiring council approval for contracts over $50,000 was a "reasonable cap."

The resolution passed by a 5-4 margin.

"We've talked ad nauseam about how this is not unique to Montgomery. Birmingham, Mobile, Auburn, etc., they've all done this," Szymanski said. "The law gives us the power to approve contracts, and as I've said before, I believe that is what's in the best interest of the taxpayer and citizen dollars. Just because we haven't done it before doesn't mean it's not the right thing to do."
