Members of the Montgomery City Council unanimously voted to suspend a downtown entertainment district after a Saturday night shootout left two dead and 14 injured.
Montgomery City Councilman Charles Jinright sponsored the ordinance and said the downtown entertainment should be suspended until the city had an “opportunity to get it under control.”
The late-night shootout on Saturday took place at Bibb Street and Commerce Street with a large weekend crowd caught in the crossfire.
Other entertainment districts in Montgomery are unaffected by the ordinance.
“There will be no open carry alcohol movement around the downtown area. That’s what we just did. It’s suspending all of that action until further notice,” Montgomery City Councilwoman Marche Johnson said at the meeting.
Entertainment districts are areas where patrons are allowed to purchase an alcoholic beverage from restaurants and bars and carry it outdoors to consume within the district. Montgomery has four other entertainment districts, in addition to the one downtown.
