In a joint effort, the Montgomery City Council and the Montgomery County Commission approved a total sum of $7 million to allow the Alabama Farmers Federation (ALFA) to move its headquarters to the East side of the city.
The incentive package was agreed upon by both governing authorities. The City will contribute $4.3 million, while the county commission will pay $2.8 million.
ALFA president Jimmy Parnell said the move was necessary because, after some workforce changes, the current space had significant underutilized space.
“ALFA is proud to be an Alabama-based company with a rich history in Montgomery,” Parnell said. “Our goal is to continue investing in Montgomery by creating jobs and developing civic leaders who give back to the community. We appreciate the County Commission, City Council and Chamber of Commerce for recognizing the value Alfa brings to the River Region.”
ALFA’s current headquarters has been located on Southern Boulevard near Baptist Medical Center since 1958. ALFA is currently eyeing a 209,000-square-foot property on Capitol Commerce Boulevard, once the Colonial Bank Headquarters.
“It sets the example of what we’re trying to do to recruit more corporate headquarters to the city and more white-collar jobs,” said Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed. “It’s just what you have to do in today’s government.”
ALFA said it would maintain its current campus while it eyes buyers for the current location.
“ALFA Corporation’s commitment of intent to locate its future-facing corporate headquarters in Montgomery is another economic win for the capital city. Alfa went through a professional site selection process that included a multi-state search,” Anna Buckelew, president and CEO of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement. “Today’s endorsements of confidence by the City of Montgomery and the Montgomery County Commission are another step in that process and send a strong signal not only to Alfa but also to corporate leaders around the Southeast that Montgomery is an ideal location for corporate headquarters.”
