Montgomery County Circuit Judge James Anderson has appointed retired Montgomery County Circuit Judge Eugene Reese as a mediator in medical cannabis litigation that has stalled the program in Alabama.

Anderson said in a filing on Tuesday he was "of the opinion that the use of alternative dispute resolution is appropriate in this case and could result in the speedy and just resolution of the above-styled matter."

Multiple unsuccessful applicant companies are suing the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC) regarding the award of cannabis business licenses in 2023.

Multiple companies that didn't receive cannabis business licenses in December still have pending litigation with AMCC to resolve before the program can proceed. The commission awarded business licenses to multiple companies last year, but a temporary restraining order in Montgomery County Circuit Court is still in effect, blocking the medical cannabis program's implementation.

Alabama's medical cannabis program was passed into law in 2021.
