After months of searching for a permanent chief of the Montgomery Police Department (MPD), Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed announced on Monday that interim MPD chief James Graboys would serve permanently.
Reed announced Graboys as a replacement for then-interim chief John Hall in June 2024, who held the position at MPD since April of that same year after then-chief Darryl Albert resigned after being placed on leave amid a sexual misconduct investigation.

In July 2024, Reed retained the services of a public safety recruitment firm, Strategic Government Resources (SGR), to help find a permanent police chief. On Monday, Reed announced that Graboys was the final pick to serve in a permanent position.
"Chief Graboys has shown outstanding leadership during his tenure," Reed said. "I'm confident he will continue to lead the Montgomery Police Department with integrity, vision, and a steadfast commitment to our community's safety."
According to Reed, SGR produced a list of 40 candidates, which was narrowed down to four finalists, eventually landing on Graboys.
Graboys came to MPD as a senior compliance specialist with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. He also served as chief of police at ASU from 2012 to 2019. Before his tenure at ASU, he was a 20-year veteran of the MPD.
