Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed released a statement Sunday evening after a weekend of violence.
"This weekend, our community was shaken by senseless acts of violence that claimed lives and left families grieving," Reed stated. "Every life lost to violence is one too many. We cannot and will not accept violence as the answer to our differences."
Montgomery Police investigated three murders overnight Saturday. A woman was stabbed to death, and two men were shot in separate shootings.
"Justice will be pursued for every victim, and support will be provided to every family affected," Reed continued. "This work is not easy, but it is essential to healing and protecting our city. Our city's future depends on the choices we make today. Let us choose compassion over conflict, dialogue over division, and peace over violence."
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit (MACS) has been operating in the city for over a year to address the escalating crime. The first half of the year saw a 28% decrease in crime.
