The City of Montgomery has paid $220,143.04 in overtime to employees of the Office of Violence Prevention since 2022.

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed launched the Office of Violence Prevention in December 2021.

According to city financial records, Keith Moore, former violence prevention director, was paid approximately $41,000 in overtime since 2022. His annual salary, not including overtime, was $78,445.64. He is no longer employed by the Office of Violence Prevention.

The largest recipient of overtime pay in the office was Roschelle Tyus, violence prevention community liaison. She has received $176,334.88 in overtime pay since 2022. In 2024 alone, Tyus received a salary of $57,763.16 and overtime pay of $64,125.15, which would amount to about 70 hours worked per week on average.

According to the city of Montgomery’s website, the Office of Violence Prevention offers a “comprehensive approach to community safety challenges, including all programs and collaborative efforts within the community.”

The department “works to reduce the risk of violence through linked strategies in partnership with government, non-profit, neighborhood, and faith organizations by utilizing data-driven programs to address community needs and implement violence intervention.” The violence prevention director reports directly to the mayor’s chief of staff.

Despite the creation of the Office of Violence Prevention, the city has still struggled with high rates of violence in recent years. A bill to require setting minimum staffing standards for law enforcement in Montgomery didn’t pass in the 2026 legislative session partially due to lobbying by Reed and other Montgomery city officials.
