The Alabama Charter School Commission voted to renew the contracts for Montgomery's L.E.A.D. Academy and Perry County's Breakthrough Charter School in Marion during their October meeting. L.E.A.D. opened in August 2019 and is serving 723 students. It received a five-year renewal. Breakthrough opened in 2021 and received a three-year renewal. It currently has 359 students.

L.E.A.D. stands for leading, engaging, achieving, and developing. The school describes its mission as providing innovative programs designed to spark curiosity, maximize learning potential, and continuously improve student achievement by empowering students with 21st-century skills.

"The renewal affirms the school's strong academic growth, operational excellence, and continued commitment to providing high-quality, student-centered education in Montgomery County. We are incredibly proud of this milestone," said Dr. Elizabeth Hill, Board President at L.E.A.D. Academy Montgomery said in a release following the renewal.

"This renewal represents the trust and confidence the Commission and our community have in the work we do each day to ensure that every student learns, leads, and succeeds."

Breakthrough Charter celebrated their renewal in an announcement on Facebook: "We're excited to continue serving our students and families, and remain committed to excellence in education every day," the school declared.

Breakthrough describes itself on its website as a "rigorous, service-oriented, and project-based public school that supports the social-emotional development of each child. We are a student-centered, community school for K–10th grade."

According to information provided to the commission, both schools have seen improvements in proficiency across all subjects and in math scores from 2024 to 2025.
