The Shelby County Sheriff's Office and the Hoover Police Department responded Thursday afternoon to a school resource officer (SRO) who was struck by a vehicle.

The SRO was assisting in the car line when the incident occurred.

The deputy was taken to the hospital for evaluation and was later released.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Douglas Frederick Sweet II, of Birmingham.

Sweet was charged with driving under the influence and placed in the Shelby County Jail on a $1,000 bond.

Hoover Police are investigating.

“We want to thank the Shelby County Board of Education, and particularly the staff of Mt. Laurel Elementary, for their outpouring of concern for the deputy,” the Shelby County Sheriffs Office stated.
