The Birmingham Police Department is investigating two related shootings that left two dead and two injured.

Officers responded to the first scene at a home in the 1600 block of Dennison Avenue around 4:45 p.m. They found a woman dead inside the home and learned a second victim shot at the scene was taken to Princeton Hospital and then transferred to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

While on the scene, public information officer Truman Fitzgerald said they learned the shooter had fired shots into another home in the 1400 block of 17th Place Southwest. When they arrived at the second scene, they found a man dead and a woman injured.

The woman was taken to UAB with life-threatening injuries.

The suspected shooter was later taken into custody after an extensive search.

Fitzgerald said the suspect and the victims knew each other.

“The preliminary investigation has revealed the shooting stemmed from an argument that's domestic in nature,” Fitzgerald said. “This shooting was not random. Each of the four victims is either a family member or family friend of the shooter.”

Crime has been a concern in Birmingham over the past several months. Mayor Randall Woodfin has publicly stated that “people hear gunshots too often; people don’t feel safe.”

In June, the mayor changed the police department’s command staff over concerns about low morale. The department currently has around 300 positions that need to be filled.
