Muscle Shoals city clerk Brittany Walker has been placed on leave following an unfavorable audit of the City’s finances.

Mayor Billy Hudson told Times Daily that Walker was put on leave on Monday pending an internal investigation.

A graduate of Deshler High School and the University of North Alabama, Walker began working for the City in 2019 in accounts receivable and later as a finance officer, according to the City’s website.

Based on an audit of the City’s finances from fiscal years 2023 and 2024, the city council was told in a meeting on January 5 that it should expect to be hit with severe fines and penalties from the IRS for continuing in a “non-compliant” medical reimbursement program with a locally owned insurance company, Citadel Benefits Group, the Times Daily reported.

The council was warned in March 2024 to end the program, but chose not to act, leaving it in place until the January 5 meeting.

The full audit findings are to be presented at the next meeting on January 20, the Times said.
