During Friday's episode of Rightside Media's podcast, U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) speculated about why some Alabama Republican lawmakers were seemingly reluctant to embrace changes to the state's congressional map to help create six or seven congressional districts that favored the GOP.
The Coffee County Republican suggested it could be part of an effort to preserve the so-called "old guard."
"Do you have an opinion as to why there's been such pushback for us to even think of having a 6-1 map, let alone a 7-0?" co-host Amie Beth Shaver asked.
"My gut is that we have a lot of Democrats that have changed parties over the years in Alabama, and they're not the true conservative populist people — the president, make America first, make America great narrative," Moore replied. "They're more about going along the old guard, business as usual, and this is a time in the nation, the 250th anniversary. You know, we have a chance, and the Declaration of Independence said, you have opportunities to remake your government. And I think often we're looking at Donald Trump as probably the greatest president in my lifetime, for sure in my lifetime. The 250th anniversary of this nation, and we have an opportunity to fix what's wrong with this country, but we cannot rest on our laurels, and we can't trust the old guard to do it. We've got a charge ahead."
