Second Amendment groups BamaCarry and the National Association for Gun Rights PAC announced their joint endorsement of Cam Hunt for Lee County Sheriff in the 2026 election on Tuesday.
The groups cited his unwavering commitment to the Second Amendment and the rights of law-abiding citizens, noting that incumbent Jay Jones was an outspoken critic of Constitutional Carry.
Hunt, an Auburn University graduate, was a proud member of the Auburn Tigers football program under Coach Tommy Tuberville during his freshman year. In 2012, after graduating from Auburn University, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.
Hunt served as a law enforcement officer at the Opelika Police Department from 2019 to 2023, when he joined the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
Hunt has earned the support of Alabama's leading gun rights organizations for his opposition to gun control policies and his firm defense of Constitutional Carry and the Second Amendment.
"This race is a clear choice between a candidate who respects the Constitution and one who has actively worked against it," said Linda McKinney, president of BamaCarry, in a written statement. "Cam Hunt understands that the right to self-defense is fundamental. Unlike his opponent, who aligned himself with the establishment gun control lobby to oppose Constitutional Carry, Cam Hunt will defend the Second Amendment without compromise."
Hunt's record stands in contrast to that of incumbent Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones, who, in 2022, publicly testified in uniform against Constitutional Carry as permitless carry legislation advanced through the Alabama Legislature.
"Cam Hunt is the only 100% pro-gun candidate in this race," said Taylor Rhodes, spokesman for the National Association for Gun Rights PAC. "While the current sheriff used his office to oppose Constitutional Carry, Cam Hunt stands shoulder to shoulder with law-abiding gun owners. A sheriff's job is to uphold the Constitution, not lobby against it."
"The National Association for Gun Rights PAC proudly endorses Cam Hunt because he doesn't just talk about defending the Second Amendment, he has lived it and fought for it," Rhodes added.
