The Alabama Public Service Commission (PSC) is encouraging callers in the 334 area code to begin 10-digit dialing before the implementation of the new 483 area code.
The PSC approved the new area code overlay last year to meet the demand for new numbers in the 334 area code region. It was estimated that 334 available numbers would be exhausted by the third quarter of 2026.
The impacted region includes Selma, Montgomery, Prattville, Pike Road, Tuskegee, Auburn, Opelika, Phenix City, Eufaula, Dothan, Enterprise, Troy, Greenville, and a large area of central and southeast Alabama.
The new overlay will begin February 23, 2026. Mandatory 10-digit dialing will begin January 23, 2026. The PSC stated that it is important to begin 10-digit dialing as soon as possible to adjust to the change.
