The construction of the new Foley Public Library on East Orange Avenue is set to be completed later this year.

State Rep. Donna Givens (R-Loxley) presented the library with a $2,000 check and said she wants to fund the library each year.

“Y’all have an amazing library, and you have a new one under construction,” Givens said. “This is just something that I want to do annually. Thank you all for what you do. I appreciate each and every one of you.”

State Rep. Donna Givens, center, presents a check for library funding to Mayor Ralph Hellmich and Foley Library Director Kate Norris.

The funds will be used to enhance the library's technology. The Foley City Council voted to accept the funding.

The new library will have 40,000 square feet of space, nearly doubling the current library's capacity.

The library will include a sensory room and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) lab.

A $20,000 Library Services and Technology Act Strengthening Youth and Family grant will fund STEAM equipment.

“This room in the library is going to be used for learning,” said library director Kate Norris. “We’re going to call it the Learning Lab. We already implement learning things at the library, and this will be used to expand that.”

The sensory room will benefit from a $19,200 donation by the Foley Woman’s Club. That is why Norris told the council she wants to name the room the “Foley Woman’s Club Sensory Nook.”
