The Baldwin County Commission celebrated the opening of a new recovery treatment center in Spanish Fort.
Longleaf Recovery and Wellness also specializes in treating mental illness.
“We need this for Baldwin County and for the Gulf Coast area,” said Billie Jo Underwood, chair of the Baldwin County Commission. “I am so excited that the people of this area can get help locally.”
Alabama Department of Mental Health Commissioner Kimberly Boswell attended the center's opening. She said the new facility will help improve the quality of mental healthcare in the state.
“Longleaf Recovery is really doing innovative and creative work in our state,” Boswell said. “Everything that they’re doing in their approach is about creating dignity and respect for the people who walk through (their) door.”
Longleaf has other centers in Birmingham, Hoover and Madison.
Alabama has a growing issue with accessibility to recovery centers and mental health facilities, compounded by the opioid crisis.
Spanish Fort City Councilman J.R. Smith also attended the opening of the new location at 13920 Cypress Way.
“This will be a welcome addition to the community,” Smith said.
