In the runoff for Hoover's City Council, Ashley Lovell defeated Liz Lane for Place 3 handily, while Gene Smith is the winner of Place 2.

Lovell defeated Lane 6,351 to 2,341.

Smith won Place 2 with 4,644 votes, while Cox received 4,002.

The two will join Robin Schultz, who won Place 1 without a runoff, while four incumbents held their seats. Two, Steve McClinton and Casey Middlebrooks, did not have opposition, while Kristi Driver and Derrick Murphy easily defeated their opponents in the August 26 election.

Lovell is a newcomer to politics, getting involved by organizing residents of the Tattersall area against zoning changes there. She entered the race with the intention of challenging incumbent John Lyda, who did not seek reelection.

The race for Place 3 garnered statewide attention when 1819 News reported on a profanity-laced podcast in Lane, in which she appeared.

Smith previously served on the Hoover City Council from 2004 to 2020, including a stint as council president from 2016 to 2020.

Smith and Lovell were both supported by the Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP).
