Alabama baseball’s season is officially over after a horrible showing in the Hattiesburg Regional. The Crimson Tide played the minimum two games and were unable to grab a win in the Hattiesburg Regional. No. 1 seed Southern Mississippi ended Alabama’s season with a 6-5 victory.
Saturday’s’ back-and-forth game featured five lead changes with Alabama on the wrong side of the final one.
Will Plattner opened up the scoring with a solo home run in the third inning to give Alabama the early 1-0 lead. Southern Mississippi quickly answered with a two-run home run in their half of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Their lead didn’t last long as Will Hodo hit a two-run home run in the top of the fourth to regain the lead for the Crimson Tide. After a solo home run by Southern Mississippi in the bottom of the fourth, the game was tied at 3-3.
Scoring came to a halt until Bryce Fowler gave Alabama a 5-3 lead on a two-run home run in the seventh. Alabama brought in closer Carson Ozmer to close the game out, but he struggled with his control in the eighth inning and gave up two runs in the eighth to lose the game.
Fowler led the Alabama offense, going 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Hodo drove in a pair of runs on the day, going 1-for-2 with a home run.
Tyler Fay pitched well enough to win, but the bullpen struggled to close it out for him. Fay finished allowing three runs on six hits in his six innings of work. Braylon Myers pitched a scoreless seventh inning but was unable to record an out in the eighth, giving up a game-tying home run to the first and only batter he faced in the eighth inning. Ozmer finished the eighth inning allowing two runs on one hit while walking two batters and hitting another in the losing effort.
