After trouncing UAB 17-2 in the first meeting on the Plains in March, No. 5 Auburn baseball completed the season sweep of the Blazers with a 10-2 victory on Tuesday night at Regions Field.
The win marks Auburn’s largest margin of victory at UAB since 2019, giving the Tigers a 19-4 record in non-conference affairs this season.
Auburn, which tallied 13 hits on the night, was led at the plate by Bub Terrell and Brandon McCraine with three hits apiece. Terrell and Chris Rembert combined for six RBIs, and McCraine drove in a pair.
Coming on strong in his third start of the season in midweek fashion, Auburn pitcher Griffin Graves improved to 2-0 after tossing four scoreless frames with three hits, one walk and a strikeout.
Auburn broke open a 2-0 game with a five-run fifth inning, sending 11 to the plate while tallying four hits. Lucas Steele led off the inning with a single through the middle, and an ensuing walk put two on for the Tigers. An RBI single to center field off the bat of Guevara gave the Tigers their first run of the frame, before a walk, wild pitch and a two-run single from Terrell capped Auburn’s fifth-inning scoring efforts.
Relievers Abe Chancellor and Marcel Kulik combined to hold the Blazers hitless for three innings before giving way to Jett Johnston in the eighth.
With Auburn needing three outs to force the mercy rule in the eighth, the Blazers barreled a pair of doubles, used a wild pitch and an RBI single to score two runs.
The Blazers' two runs in the eighth ended Auburn’s hopes of recording its largest margin of victory on the road against UAB since 2002.
With runners on the corners, Auburn struck first in its half of the second with a run on a groundout to third.
Terrell drove in another Auburn run in the fourth with a single to center field before Auburn broke things loose in the fifth.
UAB put a runner in scoring position in its final at-bat after a leadoff single and a steal, but Auburn’s Garrett Brewer buckled down with a pair of strikeouts and a flyout to left field to give the Tigers their 33rd win of the season.
Auburn will have a quick turnaround as it makes a trip to Starkville on Thursday for a three-game series against No. 10 Mississippi State. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
