It was a perfect start to the Tuscaloosa Super Regional as the No. 7 seed Alabama baseball team took the first game of the series against St. John’s 8-0 on Saturday.
In front of a sold-out crowd in Tuscaloosa, the Crimson Tide held St. John’s scoreless, led by a masterpiece from starting pitcher Tyler Fay.
Fay took the mound in the first inning for Alabama and set the tone for the game, striking out the first three batters of the game.
The Crimson Tide broke the 0-0 tie in the second inning with a two-run double from second baseman Brennan Holt.
In the fourth inning, things started to unravel for the Red Storm. Both Peyton Steele and Brady Neal drew bases-loaded walks. Bryce Fowler added a two-run double in the inning to give Alabama a 6-0 lead that felt insurmountable the way that Fay was pitching.
Justin Lebron delivered the third two-run double of the game for the Crimson Tide in the eighth inning to extend the lead to what would ultimately be the final score, 8-0.
The Alabama offense scored eight runs on 11 hits, led by Lebron’s 3-for-4 night, highlighted by his two-run double in the eighth. Holt finished his night 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double, while Fowler’s lone hit on the night drove across two runs on his double in the fourth.
Fay picked up his 11th win of the season, pitching 7.1 innings and allowing zero runs on just two hits and striking out nine. Ashton Crowther recorded the final five outs for the Crimson Tide without allowing a hit to secure the victory.
Game 2 of the Tuscaloosa Super Regional will air on ESPN2 on Sunday at 2 p.m.
