Tuscumbia City Schools Board of Education recently praised its coaches and staff for taking “fast action” in response to an incident that left Deshler High School student August Borden with lasting injuries.
After announcing it had concluded its internal review of what happened to Borden on August 15, when he was airlifted to a Birmingham hospital with traumatic head injuries, the board issued a statement with a list of partial findings.
The board said the investigator’s conclusions matched those of Madison County District Attorney Robert Broussard, who took over the official investigation after Colbert County District Attorney Hal Hughston recused himself. Broussard confirmed initial reports that another student was involved — though school staff later said it was due to an accidental fall. However, he declined to press charges, citing rough horseplay.
“The findings show that our coaches, trainer, lead nurse, and administrators adhered to the Board’s AED and EMS policies, procedures, and guidelines,” The Board said. “The findings show that the coaches jumped into action immediately upon seeing that our student was injured, and their fast actions to support and assist our student must be commended.”
The board encouraged the school and community to “move forward,” and said it would support Borden in his recovery. It also said that “any punishment” of the other student or students involved “is protected information.”
Borden’s father, Jason, told 1819 News that he did not consider the school's investigation credible and that he "anticipates" a civil case to seek justice for his son.
