U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) offered a glowing endorsement of Darline Graham Nordone as she fills the seat of her recently deceased brother, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.)

President Donald Trump first endorsed Nordone on Monday to serve as interim senator before the decision was made final, saying, "This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!"

Later that day, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster announced his decision.

The move was met with broad approval from politicos, including Britt, who offered a lengthy welcome to Nordone and continued praise for Graham's memory.

"I'm thankful to Governor McMaster for his appointment and President Trump for his steadfast support of Lindsey's sister, Darline, to serve out the remainder of this Congress," Britt wrote. "There is no one more fitting to finish Lindsey's term than Darline, whom he loved dearly and who understands the needs of South Carolinians so deeply."

"I stand ready to welcome Darline to the Senate and work alongside her to continue the work of my dear friend. There is no doubt that Lindsey will be smiling down from above as she is sworn in to fight for the state and nation to which he dedicated his life and had his unwavering commitment."

Nordone will serve as interim Senator. However, Graham was slated for reelection this year, meaning his death will trigger a primary to fill his seat on the November ballot.

That primary special election will be held on August 11.
