During a Thursday appearance on Newsmax's "Newsline," U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) discussed the ongoing government shutdown led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Senate Democrats. The shutdown, according to Tuberville, is occurring because liberals refuse to pass a clean, continuous resolution.

"They hate that President Trump's making progress, not just in our country, but all over the world, and so they are refusing to do anything to help the American people through a continuous resolution," he said. "We've all voted for it (CR). It's passed through the Senate, all through the Biden administration, and now the Democrats want to spend $1.5 trillion more."

Tuberville shot down any possibility of Republicans caving to demands from Democrats.

"It's really a joke on their side. There's no way we're ever going to vote for that," he said. "So they're just looking for a way to shut it down. And they've done it. So be it. It's on their backs."

Despite the ongoing stalemate, Tuberville noted that one Democrat senator has been a voice of reason on the issue.

"You can't deal with these people. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) is the only one over there that's got any common sense," said Tuberville. "He just doesn't look at his politics. He looks at the American people. We work for them. We don't work for politics. We're not up here to be running to get reelected, like Chuck Schumer and all of his colleagues on the left."

"But again, they are playing hardball with the American people's money. People are getting hurt because of it," he added.

On Thursday afternoon, Senate Democrats once again voted to keep the government closed despite the growing number of workers across the country being furloughed and terminated. On the same day, they blocked a bill that would have provided pay for service members and federal personnel during the shutdown. Only three Democrats voted in favor of the legislation.
