The Morgan County Sheriff's Office is investigating the stabbing death of an eight-year-old boy, and his mother is suspected in the killing.

Jennifer Nicole Long, 41, of Hartselle, is charged with capital murder.

Deputies first responded to a call about a possible stabbing Thursday morning on Village Drive. When they arrived on the scene, they encountered a man with multiple stab wounds who said his daughter stabbed him and was inside with her young son. Deputies entered the home and saw Long coming down the stairs. As she approached them, she told them the boy was dead.

The child was found in the master bedroom of the home with multiple stab wounds and a knife still protruding from his chest and was pronounced dead on the scene. Authorities have not released the child's name, but he was a student at Priceville Elementary School.

"It is with great sadness that we have lost one of our students in Morgan County. The student will be remembered for the joy he brought to his friends, classmates, and teachers," Tracie Turrentine, the Morgan County school system superintendent, said in a statement.

The injured man was taken by helicopter to Huntsville Hospital for treatment.

Long was taken into custody and booked into the Morgan County Jail without bond.
