A well-known theological seminary in North Carolina has changed its name to represent its mission and dedication to Christ.
Southeastern Seminary's board of trustees voted to rename The College at Southeastern to Judson College this month.
Although the name change was previously discussed, the board only made the decision following the 2021 closure of Judson College in Marion.
The administration contacted the Alabama Baptist State Convention officials to approve the name change.
"When we were considering names for the undergraduate program at Southeastern, we wanted a name that represents our Great Commission vision and mission as an institution and one that demonstrates what kind of school Southern Baptists would be sending their children to," President Danny Akin said.
The "Judson" name comes from pioneer Baptist missionary Adoniram Judson. Judson traveled as a missionary in the 1800s to Burma, modern-day Myanmar.
"Adoniram Judson did not ask the question, 'Should I go?' He asked the question, 'Why should I stay?'" Akin said. "And seeing the need was so great in Southeast Asia, he answered that call, and he went; and the results were incredible."
Akin said many students who have attended the school in Wake Forest have had the same calling from Christ that Judson had. That's why he said the name perfectly represents the college's mission and dedication to Christ.
Alabama's Judson College was named in honor of Baptist missionary Ann Hasseltine Judson. The college educated women on developing God-given talents and using their gifts to serve Christ.
The school closed due to financial difficulties.
